Norma Blackwater considers herself an Urban Indian: she is a member of the Navajo Tribe of the Many Goats clan born of the Bitterwater people. She began her education in Southern California at Biola University graduating with a major in Biological Science then earned her teaching credential at California State University, Fullerton. While teaching Biology and Life Science in Long Beach, CA her students and family encouraged her to continue on with education: she was accepted into University of North Dakota Medical School then a residency at University of California, Irvine in Pediatrics. Dr. Blackwater has worked in the Los Angeles community at Community Health Foundation of East Los Angeles as a general pediatrician seeing Native Americans as well as the Mexican American Community. She is a member of the Association of American Indian Physicians as well as the American Academy of Pediatrics. Currently she is medical director for United American Indian Involvement, Inc in Los Angeles.
